How the mental health services work today..or don’t in many cases..

Many people are having to seek their own avenue to get support because it can be damn nigh impossible to get help through GP’s, or mental health services

I work for the NHS and have seen how things have developed over the years.

What is interesting is the way that the amount of services available appears to have increased dramatically, and yet people still struggle to gain access to them.

For instance we now have Primary Care Services, secondary care services, counselling services that may be on offer through the GP themselves.

The more therapeutic type of services have increased dramatically. For instance 20 years ago, there was virtually no access to any form of therapy unless you were considered a very serious case.

Now there is everything on offer ranging from Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR therapy, Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), Integrative therapy, psychotherapy of various forms, solution focussed brief therapy, schema therapy, and the list goes on, and on.

But the more options that have been put on the table, it seems, the less and less these actually become available.

I have sat and assessed hundreds of people who have been referred to services, in every case because they have an immediate, and debilitating problem. And the most serious of these will access secondary care, Counselling and basic CBT will be offered as 6 sessions with no further support.

But in most cases, the time between referral and actually getting a very short service is usually somewhere around 2-3 months.

For many people they struggle to wait this long, and the support offered will often barely start to get going, by the time it comes to an end. People are understandably often very dissatisfied with what they get, to the point that they don’t bother with the whole process again if they ever need to.

And if you have had suicidal thoughts, and so many have, the basic form of support will be closed to you due to the perceived risk……

So then you wait for therapy……and the current waiting list for most forms of therapy will be around 2 years. Oh, and the therapists will refuse to work with the people who may still have some suicidal thoughts……

So the service has effectively created a situation where the middle group of people…who are not seriously mentally ill, but who are serious enough to be deemed to need therapy, will now have to wait years to even get started.

And then….you won’t be the one who can choose what kind of therapy you get, so if you find that it doesn’t seem to suit you……go back to the start.

This is one of the reasons I am shifting away from working for the NHS. As time goes on, we seem to benefit fewer and fewer people. That seriously doesn’t suit me at all.

 I'm afraid this is...

  • How the mental health services work today..or don’t in many cases.. -

    Many people are having to...

  • What if I don’t want regular sessions. I may want a few, then break, and pick up when it suits down the line, would this be ok?? -

And this is so often the...

  • Do I need to have any other kind of support to help me -

    We often talk about...

  • I am feeling suicidal and people struggle to speak to me because of this. Would this be a problem for you. -

Can you assure me that you will be gentle and responsive and not just keep trying to tell me what to do as most people have in the past. -

     I'm afraid I have...

     This service is...

  • You need to create protected time. This means that the time you are going to be spending speaking to me should be free of interruptions, distractions etc. What does this actually mean? -

    It is very important that...

  • What kind of issues can be helped by sessions with you? -

    This list can be endless....
